I traveled north to the Sunshine Coast today to see some old friends. We were talking about how things had changed and what we did with our time now. This website came up and they wanted to have a look at our couch and gym area. I quickly navigated to the particular blog entries only to find the pictures weren't working. How embarrassing! Anyway, I fixed the offending articles up but if you should spy any more errant dead links or missing pictures please let me know at

Travelling back from Rockhampton to Brisbane yesterday was painful for many reasons; distance and monotonous scenery are two of the more obvious problems. Exacerbating these two issues though were two of my pet hates; bad service and caravans. Subway, our choice of lunch at Childers, was full when we entered and packed by the time we were five customers from being served. My previous experience with Subway has been great. Regardless of the line length I normally get my food quickly and with a smile. Yesterday I got my food after 30 minutes and with a smile. A vacant, oblivious smile. We were forced to watch one particular customer repeat his order several times and still be asked to confirm each and every ingredient as it went on his bread roll. Another customer left after 20 minutes unable to wait any longer for his meatball sub. The old and nearly blind man in front of us wasn't asked what salads he wanted so he got a steak and cheese sub with no trimmings. I don't think he realised at the time but he sure would later. I am sure he won't be back. To cap it all off, when we were leaving half an hour later, two staff came in from their break after having watched the mayhem from the back door. Bye Bye Childers Subway - we won't be back anytime soon. And now on to the Grey Nomads (definition: self-funded retirees with a burning, yearning passion to see Australia from the comfort of their four-wheel drive, caravan and the plethora of caravan parks littered throughout Australia). Now, I fully support any retirees' choice to spending their life savings on a new 4 wheel drive and a caravan to drive around our beautiful country but there has to be some sort of order or strategy applied to when they drive their monoliths on our nation's highways. Don't get me wrong either, the Grey Nomads drive these rigs very safely. Too safely! Sitting behind a caravan going 85 in a 100 zone with no hope of passing for the next 25 kilometres is a frustrating experience. And this is where I have seen the danger both in myself and others. In an effort to cut time from what is already a 6 hour drive, I was sorely tempted to take some calculated and probably illegal risks to pass the mobile mountains. Compounding matters are the police sitting like vultures with speed cameras watching the few available overtaking lanes as 20 cars try to overtake a soiltary caravan. This has been a problem though for years now and nothing has been done. I think petrol prices need to be doubled for any goon with a caravan and that includes you Dom. One solution I have found is to drive at night. Caravans are replaced by road trains but at least they are faster. As for lunch ...I mean a midnight snack ... Subway isn't open so I suggest packing your own lunch. You could save half an hour on your trip. |

In the car yesterday I started playing with my hair. (Don't ask why) SWMBO immediately began to do the same. Scientists and body language experts call this 'mirroring'. It means that we are in love. |

The Chemist and I were discussing knowledge today and how it counts for naught unless you have motivation to go with it. We were discussing knowledge with reference to a teaching colleague of ours whom I shall name 'Guns' for the sake of this blog. 'Guns' because his guns (biceps) are like mountains. Guns knows everything to know about fitness and physical training, and he has personal trainer qualifications to boot. Guns lives his knowledge. He acts on it. He does what he says others should do. As a result he looks like some sort of Adonis. I wouldn't know - I have just heard others describe him like that. Anyway, The Chemist and I were talking about how much we knew about physical fitness and training. We know a modest amount. Much more than the average layperson. We know our way around a gym, we know how to do weights properly and how to write up a fitness programs for ourselves. There the similarity ends because The Chemist is just like Adonis, I mean Guns, with his knowledge. The Chemist puts his knowledge into action. An example? For months now The Chemist has been learning Planches. Okay, back to me. This blog is about me remember. I have the knowledge, like The Chemist and Guns but no motivation. I know I should be exercising. I know I should be using my rower, weights bench and walking Harry. And I know the benefits that this exercise will bring me. But I don't. The Knowledge isn't enough. Knowledge without motivation is nothing. Well, maybe not nothing - maybe knowledge without motivation is guilt. But I know I can bury that guilt deep in the recesses of my mind. Motivation can't rear its ugly head while I sit here at my computer swilling coke with KFC dribbling off my chin. And why would it? |
