5 Reasons Being A New Parent is Awesome

My last article ‘5 reasons being a new parent sucks’ was easy to write.  Focusing on the negative always is easy.  But being a new parent also brings with it so many positives and they far outweigh the negatives.  The problem is that sometimes you need to get past the lack of sleep to appreciate just how fantastic being a new parent really is.  So, here are 5 reasons why being a new parent is fantastic.

1.  Perspective

Becoming a parent forces you to re-evaluate your life.  It slaps you silly and wakes you from the self indulgent, navel gazing life you led before your child’s birth.  Having a child drags you kicking and screaming into a world where you realise you are not the most important person.  I speak only for myself of course but, without a doubt, parenthood provides perspective.  It demands a rearrangement of priorities, a remoulding of what your life is all about.  And I believe this is for the better.

2.  Snuggles

Babies love to snuggle.  Beside sleep I sometimes think it is what they do best.  After a feed, while they sleep, as they wake; babies are almost always keen for a snuggle.  And, let’s face it, most adults are too.  We humans love a good cuddle and your baby nuzzling into the crook of your neck is one of the best experiences there is.

3.  The Cute Factor

Every time I wake up our twins for a feed I am treated to an awesome display of stretching and face contortion that is so cute it tugs at my heart strings.  The cuteness doesn’t stop there.  Every outfit for newborns is designed with cuteness in mind.  I don’t think I have ever seen an ugly baby suit.  And don’t even try to wheel a newborn in a pram through a shopping centre without being stopped by at least one person, ‘just for a quick look’?  Babies and newborns in particular are cute!  So, milk it for everything it is worth.  Insist your family and friends do a household chore before they get to hold your cute baby.  I bet you they will.

4.  Dream

Knowing that your newborn child has an entire lifetime ahead of them forces you to dream big.  What will your child grow up to be?  What type of personality will they have?  Will they be successful?  So much of what lies in their future depends on you and what you do.  Sure this means some pressure but you being a new parent is an opportunity too.  The role of parent can provide fulfillment in so many ways; carer, teacher, confidant, friend and so on.  These are roles to be relished.

5.  The Challenge

Being a parent is so very hard.  Being a new parent is almost overwhelming.  There is so much to learn, so much pressure and so much conflicting information assaulting you from all manner of people, places and publications.  It is a long road but, twelve weeks in, I am still full of confidence that I can tackle this challenge head on and succeed.  I look back on my life before my children arrived and wonder where all the time was spent, what I did with my energy and focus.
